Collection Description
Biographical / Historical Note:
Everell Fletcher Dutton was born in Charleston (Sullivan County), New Hampshire, January 4, 1838. He died June 8, 1900.
His family settled in Sycamore in 1846. After two years in Kansas, he returned to Sycamore and served as deputy clerk, under his brother in law, A. K. Styles, Sr. until April, 1861. Dutton mustered into the state service at Dixon, Illinois, May 10, and into the United States service May 24, 1861. His company was made a part of the Thirteenth Illinois Volunteer Infantry and Dutton was chosen first lieutenant. In August, 1861, Lieutenant Dutton was promoted to the command of Company F.
In August, 1862, Captain Dutton was sent home sick, and while there, joined the One Hundred and Fifth Illinois Volunteer Infantry as a major. While at Nashville, Major Dutton was made a member of the examination board organized by the war department to choose and assign officers to the regiments of colored men.
On May 1st, 1864, he rejoined his regiment, which was then assigned to the First Brigade, Third Division, Twentieth Army Corps, commanded by General Joseph Hooker, in which it served until the close of the war. Early in August, 1864, Major Dutton was promoted to lieutenant colonel, and then to colonel. For gallantry and meritorious services in the campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas and for distinguished services at the battle of Smiths Farm, North Carolina, Colonel Dutton was brevetted brigadier general on March 15, 1865. He was mustered out of service at Washington, June 7, 1865, after four years and two months of service.
In 1868, Dutton was elected clerk of the circuit court of De Kalb County for eight years. During the session of the thirteenth general assembly of Illinois, he was elected clerk of the house in1877. He was elected clerk of the northern grand division of the Supreme Court of Illinois, serving from 1878 to 1884.
In 1883, General Dutton became a large shareholder of the Sycamore National Bank and succeeded J. S. Waterman as the bank's second president. Dutton also had large real estate holdings and farmland in De Kalb County and owned large tracts in other states.
In Sycamore, on December 31, 1863, Dutton married Rosina Adelpha Paine (born in Herkimer county, New York- died June 22, 1915) Her parents had moved to Sycamore, in 1853, and for many years her father was proprietor of Paine's (Ward) Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Dutton had two sons. George Everell, who was born May 8, 1868, graduated at Lombard University, Galesburg, Illinois, and succeeded his father as president of the Sycamore National Bank until 1901. He later served as president of the Pierce Trust and Savings Bank (later named the National Bank and Trust). He died in 1929. William Paine was born April 25, 1872, and educated at Harvard University. He practiced law in Illinois and then moved to Winnipeg, Canada where he owned a large lumber mill and timber concessions in Manitoba. He died in 1942.
